Chanukah is another name of Hanukkah, the eight-days Jewish festival that celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C. The rededication occurred during the revolt by the Maccabees against the tyrannical Seleucid Empire, led by Judah Maccabee and other Jews of Jerusalem. When Judah and his followers had succeeded in defeating the Seleucid monarchy, Judah urged his people to rebuild the Second Temple and light the temple’s menorah that represented knowledge and creation and was supposed to keep burning every night.
The legend says that even though there wasn’t enough pure oil to keep the menorah burning, the flames kept alive for eight days till Judah and his followers could stock the supply of oil, thus leading to the eight day festival of Hanukkah or Chanukah.
